How to adjust your position on your MTB?

Have you just finished assembling your bike, or is the position on your MTB uncomfortable? Here is how to make the adjustments.

  • Time: 30 min
  • Level: easy
  • Tools: Tape measure | Strap | Thin rigid support (e.g. a notebook) | Spirit level | Allen key set | Plumb line

Steps

  1. Adjust the saddle height using the following formula: inseam length x 0.885 = saddle height "bottom bracket axle to saddle top".

  2. Adjust the saddle angle so that it is horizontal. Probikeshop tip: for women, it is preferable to tilt the saddle slightly downward at the front.

  3. With the MTB crank arm pointing forward horizontally, adjust the saddle setback. Once seated on the saddle, use the plumb line to find the position so that the front of your knee is aligned with the axle of your pedal.

  4. To achieve optimum braking power, position the brake lever approximately 2 cm from the grip, aligned with the axis of your arm.

  5. Then position the MTB gear shifter below the brake lever, making sure it is easily accessible with your thumb.
    Probikeshop tip: fine-tune these adjustments afterwards based on your feel after a few rides.
